Act 0 — Get in

The subscription is empty. This lab creates the ARO HCP cluster, writes an admin kubeconfig, and leaves you in this repository for every later oc apply -k deploy/… command.

Estimated time: 45 minutes (about 15 active, the rest is Azure provisioning)
Persona: Platform Engineer
Blocking: Act 1 starts after oc get nodes shows the CPU workers. The GPU node is Lab 1.1.

From the browser

The browser launcher takes the workshop link, your email, and the workshop password. Start opens an Azure CLI container in the lab resource group and attaches the terminal on the page. It signs in as the service principal. Put ~/pull_secret.json in that shell, paste the prerequisite command, then paste the az aro hcp cluster create command. The cluster is created in East US, in the lab resource group.

Stay in that shell for later oc commands, or download ~/aro-ai-app-platform/state/kubeconfig and continue at Log in on your laptop.

Prerequisites

Have these before you paste the commands:

  • az login against the subscription that should own the cluster. The browser terminal is already signed in.

  • The aro-hcp extension. az aro hcp cluster create -h shows --operators-authentication. Do not install the published aro extension.

  • oc on PATH

  • Permission to create Entra app registrations in that tenant

  • ~/pull_secret.json with registry.redhat.io, registry.connect.redhat.com, and cloud.openshift.com (Insights). Override the path with PULL_SECRET_FILE. Do not commit it.

  • Quota in East US (eastus):

    • Standard DSv3 Family vCPUs ≥ 8

    • Standard NCADS_A100_v4 Family vCPUs ≥ 24

The A100 quota is 0 on a new subscription. Request it before you start. Lab 1.1 cannot create the GPU node without it.

Clone the workshop

This is fjcloud/aro-ai-app-platform — cluster scripts, operators, instances, inference, and lab assets. Stay in this directory for the rest of the day.

git clone https://github.com/fjcloud/aro-ai-app-platform.git
cd aro-ai-app-platform

This command does the Azure prerequisites. It creates the network security group, the worker subnet, the hosted-control-plane integration subnet, the 13 managed identities and their role assignments, and the customer-managed etcd key. It writes state/cluster.env. In the browser terminal, RESOURCEGROUP is the lab resource group and is reused. On a laptop, set CUSTOMER_RG_NAME first if the cluster should live in a group that already exists. The last line is PREP_DONE.

if [[ -n "${RESOURCEGROUP:-}" ]]; then
  export CUSTOMER_RG_NAME="$RESOURCEGROUP"
fi
bash scripts/lib/prepare.sh

Create the cluster

Source the file from the prerequisite step, then paste this command. It creates aro-ai-eus in East US with a public API and a public ingress. The workers are a second command: two Standard_D4s_v3 nodes, 4 vCPUs each.

set -a
source state/cluster.env
set +a

Azure provisions the cluster after the command returns. The next command waits until it is Succeeded, installs the pull secret, and writes the admin kubeconfig. The last lines include CONFIGURE_DONE and a KUBECONFIG= path.

bash scripts/lib/configure.sh

The admin kubeconfig is state/kubeconfig. It is gitignored. There is no kubeadmin password. The console uses the Microsoft account that created the cluster, and that account is cluster-admin.

export KUBECONFIG="$PWD/state/kubeconfig"
oc whoami && oc get nodes

You should see a cluster-admin identity and two Ready workers. No GPU node yet — that is Lab 1.1.

Console URL:

make status

Open the console URL from that output and sign in with the same Microsoft account.

If oc later says the credential expired, refresh it:

make kubeconfig
export KUBECONFIG="$PWD/state/kubeconfig"

Summary

  • Workshop repo on disk (aro-ai-app-platform)

  • ARO HCP cluster aro-ai-eus in East US

  • oc connected with state/kubeconfig

  • Two CPU workers (Standard_D4s_v3), no GPU node

➡️ Move on to Act 1 — Stand up the agent (Lab 1.1).
